documentary-photography-tipsThe main purpose of documentary photography is telling a story. The images are used to tell a variety of stories ranging from human stories to events like wars. It usually involves taking candid pictures of people. Every photographer has his own style and with some planning you can make your picture look more coherent. Here are few documentary photography tips.

  1. Ask for permission: If you come across a great photographic opportunity which requires permission, always ask for it. Some people will be more helpful in photography as compared to others. It is always better to ask for permission to shoot in order to avoid any kind of trouble.
  2. Do your homework: Always do some research on your subject. Plan how you are going to shoot the picture. Multiple pictures may be required in telling a story. Proper planning is necessary before the shoot.
  3. Be prepared: Once you have decided your subject, prepare the camera equipments that you think you will need. Lack of preparation can ruin the complete shoot, so make sure that your camera batteries are fully charged and you have plenty of memory cards.
  4. Back up: Make sure that the pictures you have taken are safe. Always have a back up of the pictures in an external hard drive or DVD. Have copies of your pictures at different locations to ensure that the pictures are protected from theft or any kind of damage.
  5. Inspiration: There are many other documentary photographers whose work can inspire you. Look into the work of other photographers; this may help you in developing new techniques and new documentary photography ideas.
  6. Be patient: Don’t rush with your work. If you rush into the shoot, it will reflect in your images. If you have limited time, try to use it in the best possible way.

There will be times when you may not be happy with the outcome. Don’t worry. You can take a break and return refreshed to carry out a re-shoot. Documentary photography requires creativity and planning. With these tips you can capture great images.
